Today's Thanksgiving Day!

Today's Thanksgiving Day, an important celebration in USA, celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. As you already know, people don't go to work or to school this day, they decorate the house, they spend the day with their families, they give presents to their relatives, there are also parades, and they have a very special dinner together. They eat stuffed turkey with canberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

But, what's the origin of this harvest festival? The 6th of September 1620 a group of Pilgrims left England because of political and religious reasons. They travelled in a vessel(a kind of ship)called the Mayflower.Their voyage was very long and difficult but they wanted to find a better world: the new world. They arrived to Northamerica the 11th of December. After some days, around 46 pilgrims died due to extreme cold in winter and some others died because of illnesses and starvation(lack of food). However, in the spring of 1621, Squanto, a native Indian taught the pilgrims to survive by growing food. After him, some other Indians helped them too. Pilgrims could not have survived without their help. So, they organized a special dinner where some Indian were invited. Pilgrims wanted to show respect to Indians and they also wanted to thank for their help. Pilgrims also thanked God for all the good things they get. The USA President, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thankgiving a national feast in 1823.

Canada also celebrates this holiday but on the 2nd Monday of October. The first Canadian Thanksgiving was celebrated on 15th April 1872 to thank the recovery of King Edward VII from serious illness. Nowadays, Canadian people celebrate it to thank for all the good things in life.
